Critical reception

The New Indian Express wrote, "Brilliantly written and executed, gripping and refreshing, Demonte Colony is a must watch for lovers of the genre".[8] Sify wrote, "Demonte Colonydoes sincere attempt to scare us and seriously it is one of the well written, superbly executed horror thrillers in recent times that keep us engaged throughout its crisp running time of 116 minutes".[9] Deccan Chronicle wrote, "what really shines are the foundations and technical execution of the film: writing, narration, pacing (although first half drags a bit), lighting, cameras, and sound", calling the film "a scary and entertaining affair that promises to surprise and amuse you".[10]
The Times of India gave the film 3 stars out of 5 and wrote, "Ajay Gnanamuthu's Demonte Colony is a refreshing change — it is a pure horror film with no frills attached...and this alone makes us want to appreciate the director....But despite the visual flair, Demonte Colony at times gets bogged down by predictability and the lack of a genuine sense of dread".[11] Rediff.com gave the same rating, stating, "Almost entirely shot in a single room with no gruesome ghosts or unnecessary build up, the director has skilfully created the eerie atmosphere, with incessant rain, a subtle aura of menace, unsophisticated characters and underlying hint of truth. The film is undoubtedly a fine attempt by the debutant director."[12]
The Hindu wrote, "you could make a case for Demonte Colony being a brave debut for Ajay Gnanamuthu...He wants to shake you up and leave you walking out nervously, petrified of the dark and the dead. But he needed something more: new ideas to show the horrors unleashed by the evil spirit. The ones he uses aren’t enough".[13]

Box office

Demonte Colony opened at the number one position at the Chennai box office, with an opening weekend gross of ₹64.01 lakh,[14] considered an "appreciable feat for a movie that does not feature an A-list star".[15] The first weekend gross from Tamil Nadu was estimated at ₹3.47 crore.[16]

Papanasam

Papanasam

Papanasam is an upcoming Tamil drama thriller written and directed by Jeethu Joseph and starring Kamal Haasan and Gautami Tadimalla in the lead roles. A remake of the 2013 Mohanlal starrer film Drishyam, it also stars Asha Sarath, Anant Mahadevan,Kalabhavan Mani and Niveda Thomas in other pivotal roles.Shoot started in August 2014 and the film is expected to be released in 2015.

Production

Development

After the commercial and critical success of the 2013 Malayalam film Drishyam directed by Jeethu Joseph and starring Mohanlal, the makers chose to sell on regional remake rights. A Tamil version was planned to be jointly produced by Suresh Balaje, George Pius of Wide Angle Creations, Raj Kumar Sethupathy and Sripriya Rajkumar of Raj Kumar Theatres Pvt Ltd. The team subsequently signed on Kamal Haasan in late January 2014, to enact the leading role after successful negotiations, with Jeethu Joseph choosing to direct the Tamil version himself.[3][4] Jeethu said that Rajinikanth was initially approached to do the lead role and although he was interested to take up the role, he had doubts regarding a few scenes and how they would appeal to his fans.[5] The pair then chose to alter the storyline to feature a Hindu family from Papanasam instead of Christian Keralite's, to make it familiar with Tamil audiences.[5] In August 2014, the film was reported to be titled Papanasam.[6] Pranav Mohanlal joined the team as an assistant director during the film's first schedule.[7] Jeyamohan was selected to write the dialogues for the film.[8] Noted writer/ director Suka has trained Kamal Hassan to speak in Tirunelveli accent. [9]

Casting

Several actresses were considered and approached for the leading female roles, before the team made a final decision. Simran was reported to have signed the film, though she later stated that she was not working in the film.[10][11] Nadhiya,[12] Sridevi,[13] and Abhirami were also considered for roles in the film.[14] Joseph confirmed that Sridevi was not part of the project and that the team would make the official announcements as soon as the cast and crew were finalized.[15] Kamal Haasan's partner Gautami was later confirmed to play Meena's role from the original in June 2014, marking her comeback to acting after a sixteen year sabbatical.[16][17] Asha Sarath was chosen to reprise her role as a police officer from the original version,[18] while Kalabhavan Mani would portray Kalabhavan Shajon's role from the original.[19][20] Niveda Thomas was signed on to play the elder daughter of the lead pair,[21] while child artiste Esther was also added to the cast, reprising her role from the original as well.[22] Anant Mahadevan was selected to play the role of Siddique from the Malayalam version.[23] Roshan Basheer was also selected to reprise his role as Varun from the original.[24]

Filming

Jeethu Joseph confirmed that shooting for the film would commence from the second half of 2014.[25] The film kick-started with a formal pooja on 16 July 2014.[26][27] Principal photography commenced on 25 August 2014.[2][28] with first schedule beginning in Tirunelveli where scenes featuring Kamal Haasan and Gautami were initially shot.[29] Kamal Haasan trained for speaking in the Tirunelveli accent from noted writer/ director Suka, who is known for his characteristic Tirunelveli based short story series called 'Moongil Moochu' that was published in Ananda Vikatan.[30] Shooting took place in Nanguneri, a town in the Tirunelveli district.[31] Working stills from the film were released on 11 September 2014.[32]

Alleged similarity with Malayalam Novel

Sathish Paul, a Malayalam filmmaker-scriptwriter filed a petition with the Ernakulam District Court asking to stop the Tamil remake of Drishyam, alleging that the original film was a copy of his story published as a book in May 2013 called Oru Mazhakalathu. Benoy Kadavan, Sathish's advocate, informed that his client was told by Jeethu that Drishyam was going to be a family drama, and not a thriller. But when the movie was released, he noted that it was an exact copy and that a notice was sent to Jeethu Joseph and both the Malayalam and the Tamil production houses asking for equal shares in the profits of the film.[33] Jeethu clarified that his story might have had some similarities with the Japanese film, Suspect X (2008), but cited that it was not a copy of any other story and was willing to move to the high court to prove it.[34]
On mid-march 2015, it was proved at the High Court that the allegation was false, with a verdict being passed confirming the film's originality.

Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai

Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai

Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai (Tamil: புறம்போக்கு என்கிற பொது உடமை) is an upcoming Indian Tamil drama film co-produced, written and directed by S. P. Jananathan. It features Arya, Shaam, Vijay Sethupathi and Karthika Nair in the lead cast.[2] The theme of the film revolves around the relevance of capital punishment in a democratic and free society.[3] The movie is jointly produced by UTV Motion Pictures and S. P. Jananathan's production house Binary Pictures.[4] The film was earlier titledPurampokku, a term used for a piece of land that is common to all, like a lake or a graveyard.[5] The film was listed in the "Top 10 most Anticipated films of 2014"

Production

Development

Three years after his last directorial Peranmai (2009), Jananathan announced that his next directorial would feature Jiiva andJayam Ravi, who both starred in Jananathan's earlier films, playing lead roles.[7] Yuvan Shankar Raja was reported to be the composer of the film,[8] which was to begin in mid-January 2013.[9] Since the actors were busy with other commitments, the project failed to take off. In 2013, Jananathan announced the project titled Purampokku with Arya and Vijay Sethupathi in lead roles,[10] with the music direction handled by newcomer Varshan instead of Yuvan Shankar Raja.[11] and N.K.Ekambaram wielding the camera.[11]

Casting

Jananathan revealed that the film would be a political action thriller with Arya portraying role as a social and financial analyst, while Vijay Sethupathi would appear as a railwayKhalasi.[12] Posters released from the production unit revealed Arya with a resemblance of Bhagat Singh.[13][14] In December 2013, Karthika Nair was signed to play the lead female role, as she could speak Tamil fluently and had to share screen space with two tall heroes.[15] Her role was said to be an action-packed one where she would perform her stunt sequences herself.[16] Jananathan stated that though there are two heroes in the film, there will be just one heroine.[17] Later Shaam, who earlier appeared in director's debut film Iyarkai (2003), was selected to play the role of police officer.[18] A promotional photo-shoot with Arya, Vijay Sethupathy and Shaam was held in December.[19]

Filming

Principal photography of the film started on 11 January 2014 in Kulu Manali.[20] The film was shot extensively around Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chennai.[20] When filming an emotional scene involving Shaam and Vijay Sethupathi, Jananathan shot the scene in a unique way such that he allowed the actors to enact the entire sequence at one stretch. Though it was tough to shoot, the method ensured that the improvisations the actors had in mind were implemented on the spot. Later, the director broke the sequence into shots and got exactly what he wanted and made the actors enact certain portions again.[21] The shooting was postponed for a while in June 2014 as the lead actors went to complete their other projects.[22] The lead actors had to learn to ride a camel for a few scenes in the film shot in Jaisalmer.[23] Arya had to perform the risky stunt of running on top of a moving train in an important sequence in the film.[24] A huge prison set was erected in Chennai where an extensive 45 day production schedule was shot with the lead actors of the film.[25][26][27] On 4 August 2014, the shooting of the film was temporarily cancelled by the production unit and joined the protest declared by the Tamilnadu Film Director's union against the Government of Sri Lanka's army for writing articles on their official website degrading the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalitha.[28] The principal photography of the film was completed on 17th December 2014.[29]

Release

The teaser of the film was released on 15 August 2014 in theatres across the country.[30][31] The trailer of the film was released on 04 February 2015 in theaters and social media platforms. [32]Satellite rights of the film were secured by STAR Vijay

Controversies

In August 2013, cinematographer Natraj Subramaniam claimed that he had already registered the title Purampokku for a future film, and claiming that he did not give anyone permission to use the title, threatened to take legal action against anyone who did so.[33][34] In November 2013, UTV Motion Pictures confirmed that the title Purampokku will be retained for the film as confirmed by the South Indian Film Chamber, Tamil Film Producers Council and Film & Television Producers's Guild.[35] However, the film was later retitledPurampokku Engira Podhuvudamai,[36] with the director saying, "the word 'Purampokku' has become abusive today...the title was needed to stress upon the forgotten fact that everything is common for all".
